There is a whole lotta nothing out there in Montana. I had been driving off the map for about 60 miles and the roads had gotten a whole lot better than they were... signs of civilization ahead or something similar. I enjoy driving on rutted dirt roads. It has a certain, experiential aesthetic that I enjoy. You can stop anywhere in the middle of the road and make yourself up a cup of coffee or tea and sit there for hours without breathing the dust of another vehicle. No traffic, no crazed drivers, no hurry.
But on this day I was looking forward to finding blacktop again. The rain clouds were ominous, I was certainly headed into a weather front whose bottom was beginning to fall apart. Dirt roads are one thing, mud is another. Particularly in a lightweight mini-pickup that likes to slither all over the place when the dirt turns liquid.
"Just a few more miles," was the mantra of the moment. However impending rain and potential slickness was not enough to prevent the stop that resulted in this image. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do. The sign says "Range Stock at Large," the sky says "rain ahead," I said "what the heck" and pilled over to get the shot. About 8 miles further I hit a downpour. A few miles beyond that I found blacktop and another 70 miles found a place to sleep for the night. |
