This old house is outside of the Bad River Valley, South of Pierre, SD. That dip behind the house leads to the valley. I could see no connecting drive to the house from the road I was on. This view was through a telephoto lens and the house was over a mile away. I could turn and point my camera in any direction from where I stood. The only features around me were this house and the road I was on.
When you see a picture like this imagine what it must have been like to build the house. First you had to decide that out in the middle of this vast nothingness, you were going to build a house here. You were going to hook your horse up to the wagon, travel at 5 miles-per-hour to the closest town (which at that time was probably Capa, presently abandoned and about 12 miles off) and haul the lumber and supplies you needed back. That probably killed the whole day or a good portion of it. Then you get to build your house. cook your meals, do your laundry and all of that, without any modern conveniences, without any neighbors and, um, you did this with the crazy notion that you would be able to nake a living out here amidst this ocean of nothingness.
I tell ya, these guys must have been some kind of optimists! |
